I like the idea of illustrating homographs, synonyms, and antonyms. I also love the fly swatter game. We did that in my class this past year a couple of times and the students loved it.

I agree about the dictionary usage. As I was reading I was thinking that the dictionary should not be abandoned but used at the end and compare/contrast the dictionary definition to the class/student definition.

Reading this research is quite insightful! That's all the more reason we have to make certain none of our students are overlooked and we provide the additional help as needed to our students.

Assessments

As the school media specialist, I am not directly responsible for assessments given at our school. However, I realize the importance of using our assessment data to help drive the instruction for our students. I recognize the need for differentiated instruction as well since our students learn differently. At the beginning of the year, our school uses the STAR to determine student's reading levels. I use this information in the media center to help students check out appropriate leveled reading… Continue

Assessments

As the school's guidance counselor, I realize the importance of using our assessment data to help drive the instruction for our students. At the beginning of the year, our school uses the SRI and STAR to determine student's reading levels. We use FLKRS at the beginning of the year for our students entering kindergarten. This screening helps us to identify students who could possibly be "at risk" so we can immediately work to provide everything that is needed to help our students be set for… Continue

Assessment Scenario

Screening Tests: The Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener (FLKRS) is administered in kindergarten during the first 30 days of school. FLKRS uses data from the Early Childhood Observation System (ECHOS) and the first FAIR assessment to determine a child's readiness for kindergarten.

Progress Monitoring Test: FAIR is used for progress monitoring test. It is given three times during the year. FAIR assesses the firve components of reading. It is helpful in determining the probability of… Continue

Assessment Scenarios

I am new to second grade and learning a lot about different assessments used at our school. Screenings: Second grade students are given the STAR test at the beginning of the year to determine the grade level in which students are reading. The results of this assessment allow us to group students during Triple III (Intensive Reading) according to their reading levels. The Fair assessment is also given early in the year to give baseline data on our… Continue

Assessment Scenario

FLKRS (Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener) is used for entering kindergarten students. The data gained from the FLKRS and the subtest of the Early Childhood Observation System along with FAIR data enables the teacher to identify "at-risk" students who will need interventions. Data from the STAR, SRI, and SRA Imagine It! reading series also provides data that is used to level students according to reading ability. Think Link assessment is used as a baseline assessment as the beginning of… Continue
